Sherman was born in 1820 in Lancaster, Ohio, near the banks of the Hocking River. His father, Charles Robert Sherman, a successful lawyer who sat on the Ohio Supreme Court, died unexpectedly in 1829. He left his widow, Mary Hoyt Sherman, with eleven children and no inheritance. Soldier, painter. Price was born in Nicholasville, Ky. He studied painting and portraiture under Oliver Frazer. During much of the Civil War, Price served as a colonel in the Union Army, commanding the 21st Regiment, Kentucky Volunteers. He was wounded in the battle of Kennesaw Mountain in 1864, and in 1865 was promoted to brevet brigadier general. After the war he achieved prominence as a portrait painter.
